Understanding and Managing Common Gynecological Conditions

Many conditions affect only women when it comes to women’s health. Having a gynecologist you trust and feel comfortable with is essential. Dr. Denise Leonard at StorkGYN in Houston, TX, offers all the services you need, no matter your age.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a serious and painful condition in which tissue similar to that which lines the uterus grows outside the uterus in other parts of the abdominal cavity. It can affect fertility and cause heavy and painful periods.

The cause of endometriosis is unknown, but heredity issues play some role. The most common way to diagnose the condition is with laparoscopic surgery.

Some imaging tests may be required first. The most common treatment is the use of birth control pills or surgery to remove some of the patches.

Heavy Periods

Heavy periods are a common women’s health concern in Houston, TX. If you have a period that lasts more than seven days, if you have to change your pad or tampon in less than two hours, or if you have large clots, you are considered to have heavy periods.

Heavy periods can have an adverse effect on your life and need to be managed. It is not easy for some women to speak to their healthcare provider about these personal issues, but to get help, you need to let your OBGYN know what you are suffering from.

Taking birth control pills or getting an endometrial ablation are options. Much depends on where you are in your fertility cycle. If you still plan to have children or your family is complete.

Menopause

Menopause is one of the most disruptive of women’s health issues. Every woman has a different severity and number of symptoms.

Some women have their entire lives disrupted, and for others, there is almost no sign it is happening except the cessation of menstruation. Many possible treatments can help with some of the symptoms as they arise.

Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleeping disruption, bladder control, and mood swings are all symptoms to be dealt with. Most of them can be managed with medication and life changes.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are growths forming in and on the uterus wall. They are almost always benign, and you may or may not have any symptoms.

How a fibroid is treated depends on whether you ever plan to get pregnant. Discuss the options with your OBGYN.
